Event: OCTAGON OPEN HOUSE

Have you ever been in an octagon house? You’ll have a chance to visit and even stay in a unique home in Seneca county. Join us for an open house on May 21 from 10:00-4:00 at the historic Octagon home located at 7618 Township Road 32 just outside of Green Springs.

The open house will include tours of the historic octagon home that was built in the 1850s, Nana’s Kitchen food truck will be serving tacos and other delicious food and WTTF will be doing a live broadcast. Just up the road from the property, Beaver Creek Sawmill will be doing demonstrations and will have maple syrup for sale. The maple syrup was made from sap harvested locally, including some trees from the property. Additional parking will be available just up the road at our farm located at 7731 Township Road 32.

We were able to purchased the unique property in the fall of 2021, which includes the 1850s octagon home, garage, barn and wooded area. We have done some updating and renovations to the home and it is available as a short term rental on Airbnb.com The home was previously owned for more than 50 years by Eldon and Kathryn Powell. The Powell’s lived, restored and maintained the property beautifully.

The idea of octagon houses was popularized by Orson Squire Fowler, an amateur architect and a proponent of octagon houses in America. His 1848 book, “The Octagon House: A Home for All,” was published based on his research for a design for his own home.

According to a 1990 Timeline magazine published by the Ohio Historical Society, Fowler spent ten years researching architectural designs and chose the octagon for its similarity to nature. He believed that homes should be modeled after nature’s spherical forms. He said spherical homes provided more interior space per exterior wall space; allowed for superior heating, lighting, and ventilation; and were more comfortable.

Find more information and photos on Facebook. We hope you can stop by and enjoy the property!
